Canoeing Down the Motu

The scenic splendour of New Zealand's back country has exerted a magnetic attraction for young New Zealanders ever since the days of the early explorers, and as long as the call of adventure is still heard, there will be hardy young people wanting to penetrate the long valleys leading to the Mountains. For some, a tramp in a bush valley is enough. Others want to climb to the peaks. And still others prefer to navigate the turbulent rivers in canoes or rubber dinghies.

To cater for Gisborne and East Coast folk who prefer their recreation in these ways, a Canoe Club was formed recently, following a successful trip down the Motu River. Members of the party were Messrs W. Bishop (who is president of the new club), J. Haulaway, Graham Adams, Glen Ackroyd, B. Burgess, R. Markie, and J. Allen.
