The Gisborne Photo News

Yes, What a Climate...

This week retailers from all over New Zealand are gathered in Gisborne for their annual conference. They couldn't have come to a better place.

Where else, for instance, has the sun shone almost without interruption since last October?

Whatever the weather is by the time this copy of "Photo News" is in your hands, right now as these lines are being written, early in the week, the sun is shining, there is almost no wind, the temperature is rising towards the 80's, and our bet is that most of our visitors would rather be down at Waikanae in the surf than round the conference table in the War Memorial Hall.

Conference pictures are too late for this issue of "Photo News", but they will be published next month. Meanwhile, our cover and these two pages show what Gisborne people were doing last week and last Sunday while much of the rest of the North Island was battling floods, or recovering from them.

Cover pictures for this issue were taken at Waikanae Beach last Sunday.

Why, it's so hot here that when Gisborne girls go swimming they take umbrellas with them! Look at this one, snapped last week in the Macrae Baths. She was competing in the umbrella race at the Girls' High School swimming sports, not sheltering from the sun. But it's not a bad idea.

And here is something nobody has seen for 30 years – mailbags being unloaded at the Gisborne wharf last Saturday. The weather was so wet in the west, the trucks couldn't get through, so they sent the mail by boat, to be unloaded in Gisborne sunshine.

Also next weekend is the Dominion R.S.A. bowling tournament, which will see bowlers here from far and wide. We mustn't pretend it never rains in Gisborne, so here's hoping the weather holds for this important event.

Also held last week were the annual swimming sports of the Boys' High School and the Girls' High School (below).

And over last weekend the district's best bowlers gathered at the Kahutia greens, for the annual centre fours championships. The series wasn't finished by Sunday night, but will be completed next weekend.
