This year the annual Hawkes Bay swimming championships were held at Gisborne in the Macrae Baths over two days. The summer's only wet day started the carnival, but the second day was ideal. Picture shows competitors swimming in one of the relay events.

Built by Mr Holloway and launched into the Taruheru at Oak Street. It is designed for ocean travel and may be used later for a trip to the islands.

The fire alarm was sounded at Makarori beach one Friday in January, when the bush and scrub behind the settlement caught fire. Fortunately the wind was blowing straight in from the sea, carrying the blaze up the hill, and the beach houses were not threatened.
