Rescue at Waikanae Beach

"Photo News" cameras were right on the spot when the alarm signal was given and the men with the reel dashed down to the water's edge. The belt-man swam strongly out through the surf while his mates paid out the line. Soon he was on his way back, swimming strongly as he bore in the apparently lifeless body. We stood aside as they carried the victim ashore and laid him carefully on the sand. One of the lifesavers made a quick examination and then started with the rhythmic movements of resuscitation. A few minutes, and it was plain that life was returning.

Another victim of the sea saved? Well, not exactly. Just a trial run-through for Gisborne life-savers before they go to the Dominion Championships at Christchureh.

But it could be the real thing, and it serves to demonstrate the fine service which life-saving club members give to the sea-bathing public.
