Roving Camera

Popular residents of Waimata Valley for many years, Mr and Mrs Joe Mazengarb have lately moved to Morere and taken over the tea rooms there.

Ritchie's blacksmith's shop at Patutahi taken back in the good old days, about 50 years age. Mr Ritchie, who has now retired, was given a surprise party recently on the occasion of his 75th birthday. He started in the trade at the age of 14, and is seen in the picture above in front of his shop, the third figure from the left, standing, with arms folded.

Properly in the pot in this picture is Miss S. Williams, 512 Palmerston Road, seen at right with two friends while on a tramping our of Timaru. Old whaling trypot was used 1836 to 1838 by Timaru's first white residents, the Weller Bros. Whaling was Timaru's first industry.

Proudly holding this rather large octopus are Rose and Robert Jackson, Muir Street, Michael Shotton, and Kelvin Cust, all of Gisborne. Octopus, which was right feet across, was caught at Tolaga Bay in a large crayfish pot.
