It's an ill Wind

Among the many small fires which set the sirens going in Gisborne daring the dry holiday period, one in Perry Street, Mangapapa, had its mixed blessings for the people concerned and their neighbours.

The fire involved a couple of sheds, which were promptly given the proper treatment (above) by the brigade.

But after the brigade had gone, a fire hydrant began to spurt gallons of water high in the air. The local children (below, and on the cover) were quick to make the most of a good thing. As the water flowed down the channels in a broad stream, a householder (below) quickly ran out a portable pump, and in no time the parched garden was getting a much—needed soaking.
