Six Hundred Boys In Steeplechase

In the picturesque countryside near Sponge Bay, the district's largest steeplechase provided an unusual spectacle last month when six hundred boys from the Gisborne High School took part in the annual event on a new course. This lay up the rifle range valley, to a pond at its head, then down the range road, up another valley behind the butts, over to Sponge Bay, and back to the range.

This gruelling test was run in ideal conditions, and most of the boys made a good race of it. The winners were: Senior, Adrian Cotter. Intermediate, Eric Ross. Juniors, Jee Henry.

Previous events have been held over a course from the school to the beach at Stanley Road, across the golf course, and back via Childers Road. Opinions on the new course were most favourable.
