Champion Golfers Visit Gisborne

Big event of the golf season in Gisborne was the visit earlier this month of Peter Thomson, the Australian golfer who has three times won golf's highest crown, the British Open. A disarmingly easygoing celebrity, Thomson made an immediate hit with the crowd, as did his partner, the young British professional, David Thomas.

For their exhibition match at the Awapuni links, Thomson and Thomas played a round with Poverty Bay open title-holder Len Roderick, and the P. B. Club's professional, Eddie Fennell. The local players showed up well on the familiar course. Roderick, who partnered Thomson, won three holes to his partner's two, and the pair of them won the match five and four. On this page the four players are seen starting the match.
