Many Improvements in East Coast Centre

With a good harbour, a new school, an attractive river, and a prosperity based firmly on meat and wool, Tolaga Bay, 34 miles north of Gisborne, is well-placed for rapid development. The commercial centre for a large area of rich country, it also has, on a smaller scale, all the natural endowments which make Gisborne a holiday mecca in the summer —and some others which include one of the historic places associated with Captain Cook's early visits, Cook's Cove.

Recently a new hospital has been built, and the latest development is the purchase of a fire engine as a protection measure for the growing township.

"Fire Brigade day" was a big day for the children of Tolaga Bay, who were allowed to give the new engine a thorough "once-over". They are seen above "ready for the road". The ultimate joy of a ride on the engine was not theirs, however, due to a ruling from the Uawa County Council, which is the controlling body.

Behind the children's pleasure lay the satisfaction of residents of both town and country at the provision of a complete fire-fighting unit with which to protect their property. Funds for the purchase of the engine (which came from Wanganui) have been provided by residents and the County Council.
