Telegraphic Chess

The title of the first book ever printed in England, by William Caxton, was "The Game and Playe of the Chesse". And to this day, the ancient game continues to hold its devotees. In Gisborne, the Chess Club has a growing membership.

Recently, members took part in a telegraphic chess match with Wanganui. Moves by players are transmitted by telegraph to and fro across the island as the games progress. Pictures above and at below show local players in action (or should we say contemplation).
