Victorian Visitor Looks Over our River

A member of the Victorian cabinet, Mr W. J. Mibus, was a visitor to Gisborne recently. As Minister for Water Supply and Mines in the Victorian Government, he was keenly interested in the Poverty Bay Catchment Board's big scheme to control the Waipaoa River. With Mr J. R. Hair, chairman of the board, Mr A. D. Todd, the board's engineer, and Mr F. K. Roberts, resident engineer of the Ministry of Works, he inspected the scheme, accompanied by one of his engineers, Mr Meachan. The party is seen above at Te Wairau, near the mouth of the river, where a cut is designed to divert the river to a shorter course. (For aerial picture of this locality, see picture on Page 49).

Temporary bridge over river at Te Wairau was built to transport stone, and to help divert river flow into cut.
