Maori Rugby Match

Fast open football was the order of the day when Tairawhiti Maori tribal district (Eastern Maori) defeated Te Waipounamu (South Island) by 19 points to 17 at Rugby Park.

The issue was in doubt all the way, and it was only by a last-minute try that Eastern Maori staved off defeat.

The big crowd, between 6000 and 7000, who watched the match saw one of the most thrilling exhibitions of the game ever seen in Gisborne.
