Reputed to be New Zealand's biggest pohutukawa, this tree is growing in the grounds of the new secondary school at Te Araroa, about 100 miles north of Gisborne. The big tree is reported to be 500 years old. Te Araroa was the birthplace of Sir Apirana Ngata, the renowned Maori statesman.
