Drainage for Elgin

Many parts of Gisborne are badly off for drainage when heavy rain falls, but when work in the Elgin district is completed, there should be no more trouble there.

Pictures show 3ft–diameter concrete pipes being laid along Childers Road. These will collect drainage from as far west as Chalmers Road, Queen's Road, and similar areas, and discharge it into creek beyond trees at right of picture above. This in turn flows into Waikanae Creek.

As excavator digs trench, soil is used to cover laid pipes. Note well–point system used to keep water–table down.
