Goodbye To Aunt Daisy

It is doubtful if anybody ever left Gisborne in a more sustained round of farewell presentations than Mrs L. G. Elliott ("Aunt Daisy"). For weeks before her departure, she was caught up in a round of social functions, each with its message of appreciation, goodwill, and sorrow at her departure.

But the farewell which perhaps was dearest to her heart came from the children of her Station 2XM weekly radio session. The children gathered at the Old Folks' hall about 7 o'clock one Saturday evening. Percy Stevens, 2XM's owner, made arrangements to have the broadcast made from there, and so the final session went on the air.

Besides those in the hall, there were many listeners in their homes for whom the occasion was a sad one. In due course they heard The Story Man (The Rev. E. C. Leadley) introduce the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker, and Mrs Barker. They heard Mr Barker pay feeling tribute to the good works of Aunt Daisy, and Mrs Barker presented her with a gift and a substantial cheque. Then came the familiar words of "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow". For those who were present, and those who were listening, they took on a new and sincere meaning.
