He Keeps A Night Vigil
Meet Nat Pilcher, of 57 Roebuck Road, the man who for 33 years has worked at Gisborne's most unusual job. While the rest of Gisborne sleeps, Nat has been up and about every night for all those years, patrolling until dawn the streets of the commercial area down Customhouse Street way and as far south as Watties factory.
Nat tries a door to see that it is properly locked. At right. with his faithful companion.
Employed as a night watchman by a number of firms in this area, Nat has an eerie and lonely job. For company he takes along his fox terrier, who also has a keen nose for anything untoward. Nat has been on his present beat for 14 years, and in all that time only a couple of petty thefts have taken place from premises in his area. Before that he was on the same job in the central city streets.
