Rare Birds Visit Gisborne

The White Heron, a rare visitor to Gisborne in the past, became almost a commonplace sight this autumn. As many as six of the beautiful white birds were seen at one time in the Waikanae Creek near Tucker's paddock. For several days there were four or five frequenting a tall pine tree in the paddock. "Photo News" did its share of stalking with a camera, but the picture below of three alarmed birds taking off was the best secured. Above is a reproduction of a white heron and a blue heron taken from Buller's valuable book on N.Z. birds (by courtesy Gisborne Public Library).
