Burton Bowls

With a record entry of teams, including thirty from outside the district, interest in the annual Easter contest for one of the district's most prized bowling trophies, the Burton Cup, was higher than ever this year. Headquarters for the contest was at the Poverty Bay Club, where many spectators gathered to watch the finals, postponed because of rain until last Saturday.

The final was fought out between two Gisborne Club rinks skipped by W. Langlands and F. Williams and resulted in a win for Langlands, 25-19.

The semi-finals were contested by four rinks from three city clubs. Langlands (Gisborne), Barnett (Poverty Bay), and Lane (Kahutia) were unbeaten at that stage, while Williams (Gisborne) had lost one game in section play to the former New Zealand champion rink from Mangakino skipped by H. J. Robson. In the semifinals, Langlands beat Lane 23-19 and Williams beat Barnett 27-20.
