Poles In The Picture

The news that all telegraph and power poles in Cathedral Square, Christchurch, are to be eliminated and the wires placed underground, may herald the start of an attempt to do away generally with what one startled overseas visitor called "this unlovely forest".

New Zealanders have long since become accustomed to the abundance of poles which figure so largely in views of any N.Z. city or town, large or small. But photographers, endeavouring to capture the most attractive vistas, invariably find their work cluttered with poles in the picture, often feel like taking an axe with them as well as a camera.

In many overseas cities, poles have long since been eliminated. Chances of this happening in New Zealand are most remote.
