Roving Camera

On February 16 and 17, amateur radio operators all over New Zealand took part in a national field day, working under emergency conditions. Pictures show Mr J. M. Clark, ZL2BU operator, working the Gisborne emergency Station ZL2VL on Kaiti Hill, day and night, with Mr R. J. Milne as log checker.

Competitors in a surf ski race at Waikanae Beach racing for the water after receiving the starting signal. These craft, which are unsinkable, have leapt into prominence in recent years and are now widely accepted as an invaluable aid to surf rescue work.

The widely-heralded visit recently of Mr Peter Scott to capture specimens of the blue duck had its sequel in this picture, by Joanne Cooper, of Waitahaia Station, Tokomaru Bay, of the mother duck and her five progeny caught at Owhena and awaiting removal to Rotorua en route to England for breeding purposes.

A young kingfisher was found floundering in the backyard of Mr Pete Gordon's house in Atkinson Street last month. Mr Gordon borrowed a camera flash and snapped this picture of the young wanderer held by his son. They were both told to "watch for the birdie," but the kingfisher couldn't be caught with that one.
