Scouts and Guides Pay Tribute to Founder

Gisborne boy scouts and girl guides took part in an impressive parade on Sunday, February 24, in tribute to the centenary of the birth of Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the movement, and to honour the 50th anniversary of scouting. Marching from the Opera House, they formed up in Kelvin Part for an inspiring address by the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker. Later a tree was planted to commemorate the day.

Photographs on this page show parts of the parade crossing the Peel Street bridge. On the next page are pictures taken in Kelvin Park. This was the first notable occasion on which the park has been used since it was cleared by the Jaycees. It was generally agreed that the park was ideal for such a gathering, and on the day it splendidly set off the pageantry of the scout ceremonies.
