How to carry 80ft steel bridge girders from Gisborne to Ruatoria has now been demonstrated by Monk Bros. They built a special rear-end trailer which can be steered. Result: the 89-mile trip was no bother and took only five hours. Eight of these girders had to be transported from Matawhero to Mangaporo. The rearend trailer (right) has its own driver. Soon the company will be carrying 108ft girders to the Hangaroa bridge.
Not so good at negotiating corners was this truck, which was a Christmas casualty at the deviation in upper Stout Street. The driver was unhurt.
