Pictures From The Past

Grim reminder of the Te Kooti massacre in Poverty Bay in 1868 is this monument in the Makaraka cemetery to the rebel's victims.

The massacre took place in the early hours of November 10, 1868, as the stone at left records. Major Biggs was the officer commanding the garrison at Matawhero. Te Kooti, with his followers, had been in hiding in the hills between Wairoa and Gisborne waiting for an opportunity to attack the settlement. Pictures from Mr R. Muir, Gisborne.
