Saturday's Elections
Mayor Unopposed .... But Keen Competition For Council Seats

The Mayor of Gisborne, Mr H. H. Barker, has been returned to office for a third term without an election. His was the only nomination received by the returning officer, Mr W. Hudson.

But despite lack of opposition for the Mayoral seat, competition is keen for places round the City Council table.

Only one city councillor, Mr W. Harnett, has decided to retire, and there are 22 candidates for the nine seats.

Labour has put forward a full ticket of nine and there are 13 independents.

In an endeavour to assist voters, "Photo News" publishes on the following pages pictures of all city candidates for seats on the council, Hospital Board, and Power Board.

Sitting members are denoted by an asterisk.
