HAWKES BAY / GISBORNE EGYPTIAN CROQUET TOURNAMENT
The Hawkes Bay Easter Challenge Trophy was played in Gisborne where it was the biggest Croquet event in 15 years with 37 players taking part. Some of New Zealand's top players competed making for some very interesting, high quality play at both of Gisborne's two croquet clubs.
The Egyptian System allows as many rounds as can be arranged in the time available. The winner is the player whose rating improves the most during the tournament. Those on middle handicaps can be lethal if they are playing well. The Prize Giving was as interesting as the competition with Auckland's Cliff Fenwick, an ex horse trainer, extracting all the spare cash out of those present with a lively auction. This was followed by a humorous "Tournament Managers Revenge"

It's no good looking at a watch. Nobody escaped the fun of the after tournament Prize Giving. Is that a bid for an opened packet of cracker biscuits? Yes. I'm bid $4.
