Ill-fated Vulcan over Gisborne

Gisborne people had "front seats" at a prelude to a tragedy, when Britain's £1,000,000 Vulcan jet bomber soared gracefully orer the city.
Within a fortnight the aircraft was a blazing wreck at London airport. Four of the six men aboard were burned to death. The Vulcan crashed on its return from a record-breaking trip to Australia and New Zealand.

Another stranger in the Gisborne sky was the twin-engined Piper Apache, which arrived here with the retiring Director of Civil Aviation, Mr E. A. Gibson. The Apache, piloted by Mr M. R. Cooper (behind planer's wing) costs £13,000, has a stalling speed of 59mph; top speed, 180mph.
