HILL WALK

One of the walks on the Healthy Communities Walk Calendar is the historic Areoma Hill. This defensive site on the south-eastern edge of the Mangatu Forest was a key vantage point for local Maori and offers superb views of the entire Poverty Bay region. Access is by 4 wheel drive up the Waipaoa River with a short walk to the summit and an optional walk downhill to the river-bed after viewing the summit. People with a detailed knowledge of the area accompany the group. In this case it was Nesbitt Smith (Top 10th from left) and Anne McGuire (7th from left). One requires lunch, suitable footwear and plenty of enthusiasm!
