Akiko Mihara of Shizuoka (near Tokyo, Japan) has been corresponding with Janet Solvander (of Wallis Road) for the past 12 years. Akiko is now on a visit to New Zealand and has been staying with Janet and her parents, John and Betty Solvander. Mr Solvander met Akiko's father, Koichi Mihara, when his fishing vessel called here 14 years ago. The girls have been pen-pals for nearly all that time.

Akiko's father also appeared in the "Photo News" of August, 1961.

The Y.M.C.A.Y's Men's Club proceeds steadily with its fundraising activities which includes the sale of used stamps. The processing is carried out regularly by members including, from left, Merv Bradley, Tony Jordans and Bert Trueman.

After 40 years with the Maori and Island Affairs Department, district officer Percy Brewster has retired. He has been in that position in Gisborne for the past 11 years.
