Eastern Curry-Up

After a penfriendship of 26 years the two correspondents actually met each other for the first time in Gisborne recently. Mrs Elizabeth Gibbons of Daphne Street was host to her penfriend for a week when Mrs Hazizah Jamil Reis of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, visited New Zealand. The two women have been regular correspondents since they were eleven years old and Mrs Gibbons answered an advertisement for a penpal in a stamp magazine. Mrs Reis, who has four children, was accompanied by her son, Sallehuddin, 9, who has also been a regular correspondent (although more recently of course) with Melanie Gibbons, also nine years old.

While in Gisborne Mrs Reis did some Malaysian cooking for her hosts

Mrs Gibbons is also the wife of Sgt Dick Gibbons and the couple have not long received notice of their transfer back to Waiouru after six years in Gisborne. After being Recruiting Officer in the Gisborne Army Department, Sgt Gibbons returns to Waiouru as an instructor.
