Clay Bird Shoot

Fresh from their mai mais, Gisborne Gun Club members expected to be in top form this month for the annual clay-bird championships at Tatapouri.

But blustery weather made conditions difficult and the shooting was erratic.

The saucer-shaped "birds" are made from a mixture of clay and pitch.

Pictured taking aim is Austin Green, who was second in "miss and out" shoot.

Win Ellis, winner of the "miss and out" shoot, pictured a split second before "bird" was hurled mechanically from trap. Shooters must aim fast, as they don't know where bird will rise.
