From Mr J. T. Hill, Thompson Street, we have another soccer picture from the 1920s, In 1927 a local rep, team played against a touring Canadian team at the Oval. After a fine game the locals went down to the visitors by four goals to one. The team is, from left, Phil Roots (captain), Stan Hope, Bill Bury, "Gladdy" Graham, Bert Hanlen, Harry Monk, John Watt, Ernie Bridge, Wally Howarth, Herb Hill and Andy Mclver. Phil Roots was also captain of the New Zealand side in the tests.

This, picture from wayback was taken outside the original Oil Springs Hotel at Whatatutu. It shows the mail coach about to depart for the railway station at Puha — eight miles away! A short trip of a few minutes by car now maybe, but in those days it took some time. Jimmy King is the driver, about to take off with his coach-and-four.
