The gardenia is a beautiful, scented flower with climatic associations more tropical than Gisborne's. However, the tree growing in the garden of the J. B. Williams residence in Stout Street blooms profusely, due, no doubt, to its ideal situation. The tree was actually transplanted from Patutahi many years ago, a notable instance due to the fact that this species does not take too kindly to such action.
