Round and Round and Round...

That's the way the spinning wheel goes and that's the way it is for the Hill Country Spinners of Matawai. Under the direction of enthusiast Mrs Lil Read (Motu) the group of six (albeit with different members sometimes) has done exceptionally well over the past few years, especially at national competitions with numerous placings gained and several hundred dollars in prize money won by the group. All this is quite remarkable really because the members have to travel long distances to get together for practice, some of them up to 40 miles return. This is no mean feat even for the country woman of today with all her other commitments.

The Hill Country Spinners won the Silver Spinning Wheel in Invercargill in 1972, where they also took $200 prize-money. From left, the spinners are Dell White, Lyn Hope, Fay Clarke, Alwyn Shaw, Lil Read and Robyn McDonald.
