Ponies in Parade

The biggest membership in N.Z. in a life of only 15 months is the remarkable achievement of the Gisborne Pony Club.

So it was with justifiable pride that the club presented its first gymkhana on the Showgrounds this month.

There were thrills and spectacle for the large crowd which saw 160 riders and their ponies display their skill.

Total membership of the club since it was launched by men like Reg. Hine, the president, is 718, 500 of whom are children. And it is still growing.

The future of the club—and of good horsemanship—is secured by the "kindergarten" members. The three boys above, Richard Smythe, Clive Langford and Dan Morice, are aged only 5. Kay Morice beside then is 8.

No-one watched the gymkhana with greater pleasure than the head instructor, R. Hansen, who is passing on a lifetime's knowledge of showring riding to the youngsters.

He expressed the view of all the spectators when he told "Photo News": "They're doing very well".
