The Long Way Round

×

It really was a case of the longest way round is the shortest way home when the Shell Oil fuel tank was shifted from No.7 wharf to the Gisborne Gas Company's works in Grey Street. The tank has been bought by the Gas Co.„and is to be used when the change is made from coal to reform gas later this year. The 100,000 gallon tank (which weighs 26 tons, is 40 feet long, and reached a height of 30 feet from the ground on the transporter) made the shift along the wharves and. the Esplanade, over the William Petty Bridge, along Fitzherbert Street, across the Peel Street bridge, along Palmerston Road, and finally into Grey Street. The shift was a joint operation between Gisborne Engineering Ltd, C. R. Taylor Ltd, and F. D. Mcintosh and Son Ltd, with Power Board staff on hand to clear the lines.
