Those Were the Days, My Friend!

×

After 33 years, the first reunion ever was held by ex-members of the Women's Auxiliary Corps. The corps, which was formed in 1940, shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War, served suppers and afternoon teas when required at the Soldiers Club in Lowe Street, helped at dances for soldiers on leave, did clerical work in conjunction with the E.P.S., attended mechanical, first aid and signalling classes — and did regular exercises to keep fit! Lliverstone was the venue for this very enjoyable reunion attended by 27 of the former 200-strong corps. From left, in front: Mesdames Eva Hunter (nee Smith), Flo Fisher (Wilkinson), Elsie Hanlen (Mortimer), Eileen Doddrell (Doddrell), Marjorie Knight (Wilkie), Vera Ashton (Masemann), Jo Gavin (Alley), Bella Kaua (Halbert) and Tottie Owen (Bureh). Second row: Vera Hayes (Clarke), Lil Ritchie (Miller), Sadie Harrison (Hannah), Jane Dominey (Barnes), Mary Laskey (Thompson), May Douglas (Jackson), Gwenn Quinn (Henderson) and Jean Hopkinson (Dow), Third row: Ann Wells (Bowden), Joy Foss (Low), Miss Emma Maxwell, Mesdames Doreen Cooper (Swain) and Jean Wilson (Miller). Back row: Meg Sfceppard (Armstrong), Lottie Bickford (Herkt), Ina Robb, Mary Watson (Heaslip) and Marjorie Sharp (Skinner).
