Eight First Aiders received their Elementary First Aid Certificates from the Red Cross president, Miss Greita Clifford-Jones, at the Red Cross rooms recently. The certificates are gained after a 10-week course and three exams — practical, oral and written. The Borthwick family, just prior to their departure from Vienna where they have lived for the past ten years. Mr Robert Borthwick, who was previously a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has now been appointed deputy resident representative for the U.N. Development Programme in Afghanistan. Mrs Borthwick, who was formerly Olwyn Millichip of Gisbome, is the daughter of Mrs Margaret Millichip, 32 Grey Street, and the late Mr Millichip. The family is, from left, in front, John and Russell and, at back, Robin, Jane, Mrs Borthwick, Alistair and Mr Borthwick.

The Turanga Lions Club presented the Cook Hospital with a new E.C.G. machine and pacemaker at its second September tea-meeting. The machine, which cost just over $2000 and is used in the treatment of heart disease, was accepted on behalf of the hospital by the chairman of the board, Mr Richard White. At the presentation are Turanga Lions president Ron Ferrick (left), vice-president David Scrivin and Mr White (right).
