Many Memories *******************

Mrs Vi ("Aunt") Whitfield, Muir Street, celebrated her 85th birthday on August 28. Friends gathered at her residence to wish her a happy birthday during the afternoon, and a family tea was held that evening. Mrs Whitfield has lived in Muir Street for 58 years, the last 35 years in her present residence. Mrs Whitfield has many memories of the old transport days as her husband, the late Mr Bill Whitfield, used to run a coach service from Tarawa to Gisborne and, later, when the roads were opened up, a service car from Morere to Gisborne. This used to connect with a service from Napier. Mrs Whitfield remembers well feeding coach drivers late at night, particularly after they had finished their journey through rain and mud.
