Past and Present
Today the big Norfolk pine near the band rotunda on the banks of the Turanganui River is a well-known landmark. It is a fine specimen of the genus Araucaria Excelsis.

Shows the tree in its familiar setting of lawns and phoenix palms with the Gladstone Road bridge and Kaiti Hill in the background.
The tree can just be seen to right of the rotunda, which in those days had a roof to it. Tree was planted in 1910, so that this picture would be taken soon after that. Note absence of the William Pettie bridge, which was built in 1918.
