This scene at 'Tolaga Bay was taken about 70 years ago, when the first bridge was opened over the Uawa River, which is the reason for the crowd. Since then the hotel has been burnt to the ground and the old school at the far end of the road demolished. This photo was taken from where the present school now stands.

The Makaraka Butcher Shop still stands, however. This picture was taken 50 years ago. Mrs Selby, on one of the horses at left, was a great horsewoman of the district in those days. Remembered by many old-timers, she is now 89 and is in the Thames Hospital.
