Horses of a Different Cart

×

From Mr Norman Bartlett of Owen Road comes this picture of the family car — taken in 1923. It is a three wheeled vehicle powered by a one cylinder engine and was made up with an Argyle body. The picture was taken outside the family home in lower Cobden Street, where Mr Bartlett is seen about to get behind the wheel. A one horse car(t)?

This real one horse cart ambles comfortably along Lowe Street in 19-something-or-another (possibly 1910). This view looks towards the Poverty Bay end. At left is Adair Bros' original drapery store; on the next corner is the Coronation Hotel; over the road from it is the Masonic Hotel (which looks somewhat different these days) and, looking even more different, is the last comer, on the right, which now houses Gallery 51.
