Troubled Waters?
From Mr C. V. Clayton, Wairoa, we have these two photos of the bridge over the Karawa Stream, between Manutuke and Muriwai. This bridge has just been widened to accommodate two-lane traffic.
Dad'S Army?
The original wooden decked bridge, as pictured in 1917.
Mr Clayton built this bridge (just widened) in 1928. He had one helper and used a horse to work the pile driver.
From Mr Fred Williams, 9 Sievwright Lane, comes this pic of the Gisborne Home Guard, taken in 1942. The photo shows some of the group upon the acquisition of three searchlights by the Guard. That's Mr Williams in the middle of the picture, holding a rifle.
