Underground...

A Gisborne party organised by Mr R. Sheffield, Internal Affairs Department physical welfare instructor here, and the Gisborne Y.M.C.A., paid a visit to the little-known but fascinating Maru Maru caves last month. The caves are 50 miles from Gisborne on the Tiniroto road, on the property of Mr H. G. Kent.

The party, guided by Mr E. A. Norgrove, included Mr W. A. Pullar, field officer of the Soil Bureau, Dr P. Allingham, a keen botanist, and press and broadcasting representatives.

An extensive system of underground caverns was revealed to the party, complete with stalactites and glow-worms. The latter were considered to compare most favourably with Waitomo. (Photographs by Barry Martin).
