Sixty Years Married

Mr and Mrs R. L. Arnold, 29 Bayly Street, will celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary this month. An anniversary party was held during the school holidays making it easier for relatives and friends to attend. Originally from Tadmor and Carluke respectively, Mr and Mrs Arnold met when both were hop-picking in Nelson. Courtship was quite a business in those days as Mr Arnold had to travel 70 miles by horse and gig to see his fiancee. Mr Arnold built the family home on his farm at Tadmor. He was also one of the first car owners in the district. In 1920 the Arnolds moved to North Auckland and in 1933 joined the Apostolic Church, from which he retired two years ago, coming to Gisborne to live.
