Pictures from the Past

From Mrs F. C. Le Pine, Moana Road, we have these pictures of life up the Tauwhareparae Road, out of Tolaga Bay, before the First World War.

A bullock wagon takes the wool out from Doonholm Station, a far cry from today's easy transport by truck and trailer.

In those days stores had to last for months and this picture shows part of the set-up on Doonholm in those earlier days. At left is the station storehouse (on posts no less) where everything was stored in bulk, such as flour by the sack and sugar by the bag.

From Mr Royce Hadwin of Lyndhurst Street comes this shot of Kingsford-Smith's Southern Cross on Waikanae Beach (off Roberts Road) in April 1932. The famed aviator was flying around the countryside giving joy rides at ten bob a throw.
