Goodbye, Power Poles!

Start Made to Put Electricity Wires Underground in City

It made a bit of a smell outside Woolworths, but in the long term it will be worth it, all that digging up the street and footpaths. Power poles and wires are going underground!

But don't cheer too loudly. The replacement programme will be slow and costfy, and it will be a very long time before any real difference is noted.

In the meantime the first-stage areas are in Bright Street (Palmerston Road to Childers Road) and in Childers Road (Bright Street to Peel Street).

This is a start to a fine project and one which will certainly enhance the appearance of the city.

These plastic protection pipes were laid in the trench. Later, when the footpath trenches were ready the cable was to be drawn through the pipes.
