Charitable Donations

As promised by Sir Henry Kelliher, bar takings on the opening day of the new D. B. Gisborne Hotel in Kaiti have been donated to worthwhile causes. The Gisborne Art Society received $915, and the Heni Materoa Home, the Waikirikiri School, and the Wainui Surf Life-saving Club, $305 each.

Coronation Stays Open

Due to close on March 31, the Coronation Hotel now remains open until June 30. With the proposed transfer of the licence to Palmerston North still under transaction, and the completion date for the New Zealand Breweries' new Sandown Motor Hotel not now expected till towards the latter part of May, the Licensing Control Commission has granted the hotel three months' grace.

Gold Star Firemen

Present at the recent conference of the Gold Star Firemen's Association, Wellington province, were these three Gisborne members. A gold star is awarded to firemen after 25 years' service.

Noumea Bound

The trimaran "Lady G" called into Gisborne recently on her way from Lyttelton to Whangarei. If there is a class for trimarans in the Auckland to Noumea yacht race this year she will enter that class. If not she will sail just the same. On board was crew member Bruce Arnold, son of Mr and Mrs J. W. Arnold, Awapuni Road. Bruce is on leave from his position as a research technician at the Forest and Range Experimental Station at Rangiora. Crew members pictured on board the "Lady G" in port are, from left, Bruce Arnold, Allan Legg and his fiancee Pauline Watson, Don McIntyre from Rochester, N.Y., U.S.A., who is on a working holiday through the Pacific, Graeme Copland (skipper), and Chris Piper at back. The "Lady G" is 35 feet long, has a beam of 20 feet and has working sails of 560 square feet.
