Gisborne born and bred, Mr A. H. (Bill) De Costa was awarded the M.B.E. in this year's honours list for long service to the life-saving movement in New Zealand. In his early days Bill was a member of the Maraenui Surf Life-Saving Club team (Wellington) which won national honours. Nineteen years ago he was a foundation member of Gisborne's Waikanae Surf Life-Saving Club, was elected president and has held that office ever since. He is a qualified judge and instructor, and has also been president of the Gisborne branch of the Royal Life-Saving Society (except for a two year break) since 1945. Bill has already been awarded the R.L-S.S. Silver Medal, one of the society's highest awards, as well as their Recognition Badge. He also served for nine years on the Gisborne City Council, and holds the Gold Star award of the N.Z. Air Force Association. Incidentally the first subscriber to Photo News was none other than Bill De Costa.

The award for the most outstanding young member of the Ngati Poneke Club, Wellington, went to Atamoana Kerekere, daughter of Bill and Mihi Kerekere, formerly of Gisborne. The award, this beautiful woven cloak, is given for outstanding qualities in the various club activities; on the marae. on stage, and all facets of Maori culture, and language.

Clive Allcock, son of Mr and Mrs G. T. Allcock, 9 Cook Street, is at present on a tour of various hospitals in the U.S.A., with a party of medical students from Otago Medical School. At present Clive has an.externship position at the Mendocino State Psychiatric Hospital, Talmage, California. On his last summer vacation Clive worked at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney.
