Pictures From The Past

From Mr P. Niven, Wellington Street, comes this picture of ancient travel. The Tapuae Rocks posed a hazard for travellers from Gisborne to Tolaga Bay in the days when the journey was undertaken by horse and coach along the coast. This mode of travel was all the rage in the 1890s and early 1900s.

Also from Mr Niven comes this picture of the harbour taken from the slopes of Kaiti Hill. It would be taken about the turn of the century and shows some of the trading ships anchored alongside the jetty opposite the Turanganui Hotel, the ideal place for thirsty seadogs.
