In the Wake of the Endeavour

×

One day last month, as evening shadows began to fall across Poverty Bay, a little ship sailed into the bay, escorted over the last few miles by fishing boats and launches. It was the Richard and John, which had sailed 13,000 miles in 100 days to become the first ship from England to make its New Zealand landfall at Gisborne since the Endeavour in 1769. The Richard and John, a 50-foot fishing vessel, was purchased in Cornwall by Mr. L. J. Higham, of Gisborne, who, with his six companions on the voyage, received a tumultuous welcome on his arrival home. Beyond the ships in this picture is Young Nick's Head.
